Coco Chanel once said, "To be irreplaceable, one must always be different." Michael Herkes, known as "The Glam Witch," embodies this philosophy in their book, Glamstrology: Discover Your Signature Style with Astrology. This insightful guide shows you how to harness your natal chart to develop a unique and vibrant personal style that reflects your individuality and manifests everything you want in life right now.
SQUAD Magazine recently caught up with the "Glam Witch" during a book signing and Caftan party at the PeePa's Boutique in Palm Springs, California. Their new book is an ideal resource for navigating relationships through style. "If you know someone's astrological sign and face tension with them, dressing a certain way can help ease the conflict. And if you're going on a romantic date, understanding your date's sign. allows you to enhance your allure and attractiveness with your style—it's like camouflage."
The Magic Spell of Glamour and Witches
The word "glamour" traces its roots from a Scots-to-English translation of "grammar," which was transformed into "glamer" and "glamour" in the 1700s. Initially, it meant "magic spell."
According to the Glam Witch, "Glamour was originally recognized as a witch's spell until the 1930s when it became associated with Hollywood culture and the lifestyles of the rich and famous transforming into what we now know as glam."
The Glam Witch defines a witch as "someone who manifests their life and controls energy, skillfully manipulating it to attract or repel." Their practice centers on magical aesthetics and adornment, using fashion and makeup to foster inner and outer transformations.
"Magic encompasses more than just working with the elementals; it involves our intellectual landscapes, inner creativity, emotions, and well-being. A witch connects with life's infinite possibilities, crafting the best reality for themselves and those around them."
Glamour and Psychology
The core idea of Glamstrology is that people can embark on both inner and outer transformations to create change in their own lives and those of others. By embracing beauty, they can evolve into living works of art. "After all, witchcraft and magic are science that hasn't yet been proven. One aspect of enclosed cognition is that what you wear influences how others perceive you and how you see yourself."
Psychologists conducted a study where students dressed in white lab coats, resembling doctors. Those wearing the lab coats were treated differently than those who weren't, and the students themselves felt a shift as well. Interestingly, their test scores even improved.
The Intuitive Stylist
The Glam Witch describes themselves as an "intuitive stylist." They have a passion for caftans and were wearing a vibrant red sparkly one paired with golden heels and a stunning gold necklace that featured what looked like a reasonably sized amber or topaz crystal.
Having written a total of eight books, their secret to productivity is the 2020 COVID pandemic. "I was bored and had nothing to do, so I wrote. I've always wanted to be a writer and use my words to create beauty in the world," they explain. The Glam Witch grew up admiring another 'witch' author and aspired to emulate her. "I loved watching Sex and the City and dreamed of having my own 'Hex and the City,' exploring big cities fabulously."
They began practicing astrology six years ago. "I always thought astrology was too complex and abstract with too many layers. But then I met someone who simplified it for me. Now, I can explain astrology in a more accessible way, making it easier for others to understand."
First Time in Palm Springs
The Glam Witch is a Palm Springs' virgin,' exclaiming, "I'm obsessed! I can't contain my excitement. Palm Springs feels like it's been plucked right out of a movie—like a whimsical 'Barbie' land. It's enchanting as if tucked away in its own little time capsule!"
